Brief Backstory
Gifted the name of a long-forgotten Garlean saint from a deserter medicus, Koinos began his life as an anomaly among Dazkari boys. The eldest son of the huntress, Kholli, Koinos was expected to marry and raise a family. However, the vocation of a househusband never appealed to him. Seeking adventure, he was one of the few Dazkari men to undertake the perilous test of Xaela warriors, Bardam's Mettle. While battling in the Nadaam was thrilling, it also came at an enormous cost. After a heavy loss to the Oronir, Koinos left his encampment to explore the world beyond the Steppe. In his travels in Yanxia, the young Xaela warrior was saved from a pack of Garlean imperials by a Sharlayan mage capable of channeling his own aether to cast magic. This mage took Koinos as an apprentice, teaching him the ways of red magic—a curious art born out of the conflict of the sorcerous cities of Mhach and Amdapor. Under the red mage's tutelage, Koinos became a student of the magic arts, working to become a red magus in his own right before applying his training and understanding to art magic. After several years of tutelage, Koinos travels Etheirys alone, seeking rare tomes that possess knowledge of other arcane arts. Being good-natured, he often finds himself sidetracked into helping those who can't help themselves.
LoreThe Dazkar Tribe
[Official FFXIV Lore] Regarding the Dazkar tribe of the Azim Steppe: "Household duties such as cooking, cleaning, and childrearing are handled by the males of the Dazkar who, other than when on the move, rarely ever leave their family's yurts. Female Dazkar are tasked with hunting, and are known across the steppe as being some of the most accurate archers in the realm."[Implied FFXIV Lore] People of the Dazkar tribe often dress in attire using mole brown dyes.[Headcanon] The women of the Dazkar tribe participate in the Naadam on their tribe's behalf. It is rare for a male Dazkar to pick up a sword, let alone undergo the dangerous trials required to battle in the Steppe's annual mass conflict against warriors of the major tribes.[Headcanon] The women of the Dazkar tribe will pluck a feather from the yol that they've tamed and defeated and gift it to a male loved one who wasn't capable of fighting themselves. This could be gifted to a father, son, husband, or betrothed.
The Sun Shrine
"The long history of the Faith of the Twelve shows that the orthodoxy's objections to syncretic beliefs have less to do with the purity of the faith, and more to do with who has the right to determine what is official under the church." The epistles of Saint Jujuchi JuchiRecently, Koinos became the ordained caretaker of a newly furbished Shrine to the Goddess, Azeyma, in the Mist [Ward 12, Plot 8, Siren]. After years of extensive study, Koinos came of the belief that the God, Azim, of the Steppe and the Goddess, Azeyma, of Eorzean belief were one and the same deity. As such, the shrine is dedicated to both Azeyma of the Western pantheon and Azim the Dawn Father of the Xaela people. The shrine is designed in a style reminiscent of the shrines to kami in the East. The shrine is also "guarded" by a black hayate named Interceptor.
The Ruby Fencers
Among those few remaining magi of the red school's great purge are a shadowy faction known as the Ruby Fencers. One such member was Aurelio Wyrmsblight, a hyur mage from Sharlayan who acted as Koinos' teacher for several years. The Ruby Fencers were known for their mastery of En magicks, spells capable of enhancing the blade of weapons with Red Magick to often devastating effects in melee combat.
St. Koinos cen Lykos
"Under the Warden's star, all lives are bathed in holy light without regard to place or person. The world is our one country. And the true religion is that which seeks to do good and only good for its people." The epistles of Saint Koinos cen LykosWhen Koinos was born, he was delivered not by a Dazkari midhusband but a former field medic in the Garlean army who deserted and made a home in Reunion among the Qestir. In his honor, Koinos' mother allowed the medicus to choose the boy's name. The medicus chose the name of an obscure saint devoted to Azeyma of the Twelve.Born into the artisan class, St. Koinos cen Lykos was pivotal in leading a working-class revolt that, for a time, created a more equitable society before the military took back hold of the territory from the peasantry. The revolutionary was executed as a martyr, but his accomplishments were written out of history by recent Garlean academics. His deeds were largely passed down through oral tradition and some texts survive in Gridania which detail his exploits. The most notable of which is the tome, On the Saints of Ilsabard, by Semih Mewrilah.
In The World Unsundered
"And then there was Amaurot... Never was a city more magnificent. From the humblest streets to the highest spires, she fairly gleamed... Not that you would remember any of this." Emet-SelchKoinos is the reflection of Dryope on the Source. In the world Unsundered, she was a researcher in the field of phytobiology under Halmarut. As a close friend of the famed Azem of the Convocation, she often found her work undisturbed thanks to her friends in high places. Her mastery over creation magicks gave way for advances in harnessing the power of the sun in the form of photosynthesis, a process which didn't require the pure draining of aether from the soil. She was known to conjure magicks from her own aether rather than the lands around her, producing water magicks with healing properties that rivaled even the Convocation's Emmerololth. She opposed the summonings of Zodiark and Hydaelyn, joining with Azem in the Final Days. Her most cherished creations were the dahlia flower, cardamom, and pistachio trees.

HooksWhat's in a name?
Like many Xaela, Koinos carries his tribal name, Dazkar. Any Steppedweller familiar with the major tribes would recognize who the Dazkar were. They'd especially find a male Dazkar adventuring outside his yurt to be unique. Koinos' tribal affiliation would probably be pretty easy for a fellow Xaela to spot, especially if he's wearing his tribes mole brown colors.Koinos' given name is Garlean in origin. Those familiar with Garlean names and conventions might find such a name for a Xaela to be curious at the very least.
Good Samaritan
Koinos is a do-gooder who can't say no to a person in need. If your character is distressed or in need of help, Koinos would be hard-pressed not to step in. If you're on a quest and you're looking for a capable mage, perhaps Koinos' name came up with a mutual acquaintance? Or maybe you've heard of his past exploits?
I made it myself
When he's not wearing his tribal attire or wearing the coat of a Xaela udgan, Koinos often wears clothes of his own creation, including a recreation of the robes of Ivalician mystics of legend. Among his other talents, Koinos is a self-taught painter and carpenter, having built most of the pieces used in his shrine and having painted the portraits used to decorate it. Perhaps you are an admirer of weavers' works or you've heard that Koinos is a fine portrait artist that you might like to hire yourself.
Are you a godly man?
As an ordained caretaker of a shrine of Azeyma, Koinos is certainly interested in religion and the various beliefs among the people of Hydalelyn. If you're a believer or seeking the blessing of Azeyma (or perhaps even Azim), why not stop by Koinos' shrine? You could always stay for tea.
Geeks unite
Koinos is a huge fanboy of Jenomis cen Lexentale's theatre work and he is heavily vested in the lore of old Ivalice, going so far as to recreate popular apparel of the Ivalician mystics of old. Has your character taken an interest in Lexentale's plays or the Zodiac Brave Story? Perhaps they're scholars of old Ivalician lore?As a student of the magic arts, Koinos is always looking to grow and learn more beyond what he already knows—whether that be learning more about magicks he's never tried himself or growing in the study of red magic.Koinos also has a deep fascination with samurai and the bushido code, even going to far as to decorate his living quarters with samurai mannequins. Perhaps your character is trained in the ways of the samurai or they're a ronin who doesn't mind a curious outsider.
